Biotanica, Patchouli, Premium Organic Essential Oil - healthy digestion - boosts energy levels - optimal libido - assists natural healing.*

The Pogostemon (Pogostemon cablin) is the major genus of the family Lamiaceae.

What Is Patchouli Essential Oil?

Patchouli may have an outstanding positive effect on mood and has been used as a complimentary agent for alternative mood support Western countries. Patchouli is known as “Guang Huo Xiang” in Chinese, popularly called "the scent of the sixties," has a musky, earthy, exotic aroma. Pogostemon has been to support the common cold and as a fungal support herbal medicine. Extensive cultivation of this plant is carried out in Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China, Brazil, and Pakistan for its essential oil commonly called patchouli oil [1]. Patchouli oil in the plant is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as it offers various types of health activities. It has also been reported it may support health especially with drug resistant bacteria. Research showed that Pachouli may cause bacterial cell walls break through, inhibit protein biosynthesis in bacteria, and support healthy DNA replication in bacteria similar to conventional medicine action [2]. Cell calming support, antioxidant health, abnormal cell growth support, calming effects and microbial support are just some of the amazing supportive benefits of this essential oil. [4]. *

How could Patchouli Essential Oil Improve My Health?

  • Complementary and alternative medicines are used by 60–80% of developing countries as they are one of the most prevalent sources of medicine worldwide. Patchouli oil is also one of the most popular natural products, with one of their main applications being for their use in dermatology [4]. Patchouli oil has positive effects on dermatological health including dermatitis, foot odor, eczema, lupus and acne and then general skin health areas such as carbuncles, furuncles, cellulitis, impetigo, boils and wrinkles, scars, and scabs [13]. *
  • Topical skin infections typically require topical treatment. Patchouli essential oil is one of the solutions available to support skin health and wounds. A total of 26 compounds in patchouli oil may have strong antimicrobial effects against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. proteus, S. dysenteriae, T. bacillus, and S. aureus. Particularly, pogostone and patchouli alcohol have a potent microbial suport activity which their contents exceeded 60% in patchouli oil [3]. Lipopolysaccharide which was endotoxin from Germ negative bacteria were upturned after application with patchouli oil at the concentrations of 40 μM [12]. *
  • Patchouli alcohol in patchouli oil showed to have fungal supporting activities against all tested fungi species of Aspergillus and prevent the adhesion of microorganisms to surfaces [5]. Hence, it is sturdily recommended to be used in compositions, oral hygiene compositions, dental care compositions, and denture care compositions [6]. *
  • Patchouli alcohol is strongly recommended to be used for hand washing compositions. Concerning the assessment of in vitro viral health, it was shown that Patchouli alcohol of patchouli oil, at concentrations of 2 μg/L and 10 μg/L, supported the population of plaque by 75% and 89%, respectively. It was suggested to be the influenza supporting agent for the H1N1 and H2N2 strains [7, 8]. *
  • Patchouli oil protects us from UV radiation and photo-aging by its strong anti-oxidative activities. In vitro, it was shown that it could block the malondialdehyde formation from squalene on UV irradiation by 28.8%, in the thiobarbituric acid assay [9]. Considering that cell-calming and oxidatiion interaction with each other, both cell-calming and antioxidative activities of patchouli oil were investigated in UV radiation-induced cutaneous photo-aging mice and in ethanol, and stress-induced rats [10, 11]. The results displayed it has exceptional cell-calming and antioxidative property and promising agent for healthy photo-aging. *
  • Aromatherapy is an inexpensive and non-invasive modality of alternative medicine used to improve the psychological health and well-being [14]. Patchouli oil contains volatile organic compounds that exert a positive effect by penetrating the body by dermal (aromatherapy massage or topical application of aromatherapy) or olfactory administration (inhalation aromatherapy) [15]. Pogostemon cablin has been used for their aromas as herbal remedies since ancient times because of their sedative effects [16]. Since essential oils are lipophilic, they can easily be carried to all organs in the body [18]. Patchouli oil is an adjuvant support for a healthy mood. In the inhalation aromatherapy, the inhaled air containing essential oils can not only reach the circulation system via the blood capillary network in the nose and the bronchi in the lungs, but also stimulate brain areas directly via the olfactory epithelium. So, mood support symptoms, including feelings of guilt, sadness, worthlessness and desperation, inability to experience pleasure, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, lack of energy, poor concentration and memory, motor retardation, fatigue might be suppported by patchouli alcohol in patchouli oil [17, 19, 20]. *
